Sorry guys.... But what's the point paying hourly rates of whatever plus parts, just to top up and check fluids... D. I. Y. It's seriously not rocket science, but do you queue up just to get yer book stamped? Daft !! Get to know yer local garage mechanic... The other serious things like timing belts and diesel timings are covered on the site you are on now !! Get a spanner and save sum dosh

some people prefer to pay for it done as they don't have the time or knowledge to do it themselve's due to family or work commitment's. That'll be me then. Plus the fact that I have a trustworthy garage about half a mile away. I simply don't have the knowledge, the time, the tools or the space to DIY

i agree that some of the simple stuff is within the reach of a lot of us.
i tend to judge if i can do sommat by my basic tool kit. if the tools i have can do the job, then i probably can too. if i havent the tool for the job, its probably better done by somone who has the skills.

The other point is that with all the best will in the world not every thing can be DIY .
The further technology pushes the more technical the faults become.
I would hate to think how much it would cost to replace all the fluids at a garage. Its just cost me approx £95 with filters to DIY.

I tend to look at what I have done before I have the tools for most jobs now but sometimes i need to take some professional advice and be shown how to do something for the first time Luckily I have a friendly mechanic that will do that at mate's rates

I was quoted £165 for engine oil and atf change from a local garage - and the owner is a mate So definitely cheaper to DIY
