think i found the source of my rumbling, went to check the front passenger bearing, took the cap off and the circlip and washer fell out, in amongst the grease there is shards of metal, what i presume is left of the race, is an easy job to replace the bearing? and is there any specialist tools needed?

Daed simple Mark, can do it on the side of the road! Remove brake caliper bottom bolt and swing caliper out of the way, tie up caliper, undo the cur clip and remove shims, keep safe. Using 2 philips screw drivers and a tommy bar between them undo the drilled retaining nut (sorry remove 2 small phillips screws in retaining nut first!) Pull disc towards you and the bearing should come with it, remove disc and hub assembly as one. Using the extension bar of a 1/2" drive socket set locate the triangular slots inside the hub and knock out the races, one each side. Using a soft copper mallet or similar tap new races into place, I turn the old races round and tap them over the new races to locate fully. Grease up the new bearings and place inner one into race and carefully tap the oil seal into the hub. Replace the hub onto the stub axle and then place outer bearing in place.Slap grease everywhere!! Now just reverse the assembly of the retaining nut and shims and cur clip. OVER TIGHTEN the retaining nut untill the wheel will NOT move. Now undo retaining nut and nip up till tight but not too tight, wheel needs to move. Replace the small screws, tighten retaining nut to line up! Now just replace caliper and wheel, job done!!

when loosening off the adjuster, should the wheel 'freewheel'? or should there be some resistance?

I found those two screws already chewed up on mine before i even removed them. There is not a screwdriver in the known universe that removes them, once in that condition.....

That's what i found - a sharp chisel to cut a slot and then into the side at an angle did the trick

In the absence of an impact driver, I always give the back of screwdriver a clout with a mallet to 'break the seal' on crossheads. Works a treat 9 times out of 10
