On our local forum there is a thread listing potential problems on the 4m40 (2.8 TD) engine.
The statement was made that they never reach high kms without problems.
I say that's hogwash.
Please tell me about your high (trouble free) km 2.8, please.

My air con pump has packed in, nothing to do with the engine though, still strong at 146000, doesn't burn hardly any oil, oh and a water pump needed replacing, in 4.5 years didn't think thats too bad (touches 2x2 bit of timber)

Mine's done approx 156,000 kms and so far I've not had any major problems. Few little niggles that TT has been good enough to sort out for me. Handbrake's still playing up and I have a rattle coming from underneath, drivers side, but there appears to be nothing loose so don't know what that is. Otherwise it starts and drives sweet as

My big gal, is having lots of work done, but then she will be spot on, apart from an axle clonk changeing gears! 1995 2.8 gls, so far total cost of repairs £1300, and only had it six weeks Then it's down to me to make sure it's looked after, for instance a radiator flush every year, and regular oil and filter change.

Monty's done 128,000 and doesn't use oil, doesn't leak, doesn't break down, doesn't do anything wrong! except... bloody rear slider pins in the calipers... but that's nought to do with the engine!
