ive just bought a pajero mk2 on a k plate,wont go into top gear?have cleaned the box filter,oil was fine filter not too bad! there is atemp sensor on the cooler pipes next to the gear box have tested it with a multi meter but there is no resistance at all from it could this be my problem??? is this the gear box temp sensor that stops it putting it into top gear if its too cold? by the way phone main dealer in kirkcaldy fife this morning and the lad in service said it was normal for it to do only 70 flat out at 4000 revs.

Rubbish - should go much faster than that, around 90 easy and 70 should be about 3,000 rpm from memory
by top gear I'm assuming you mean overdrive ?
There are two temp sensors involved in the decison making - ATF temp and coolant temp
Not sure exactly how that ATF sensor works but normally you can by-pass em to earth to test.
Also check the kick down cable
But - beware, it could also be a burnt out clutch pack on the OD which means a gearbox re-build costing loads so if you can, take the car back and get the seller to sort it.

As TT says. They are good for 90. 70 is about 3000+ rpm.
Experience the very same problem earlier this year. Check the kick down cable, but I suspect it maybe the OD clutch pack. I had my gearbox reconditioned. Ok now.

i drive a 2.5tdi and it changes into last gear at about fifty then i can push to just over 90 not very stable though

its as if its slipping throug the gears, it changes twice and the overdrive comes in at 45 and doesnt change again, so the overdrive is working but when you ease off the gas then put your foot down again its as if its slipping until it his the high revs. well the revs you where at originally.its got my head batterd! ive bogt a second hand gearbox but dont want to fit it just encase its down to an electrical problem! ive done everything that has been sugested in the other forums but to no evale? the gear box oil has been drained and filter cleaned wasnt that bad to start with. oil had slight burnt smell about it but no bits in the oil or filter!

and bad news it was the o/d clutches that are worn out! have to change the box after all oh well! at least it ot a bad job!!!!

my dads LWB 2.5 auto has EXACTLY the same problem Allan described.
How much too replace gearbox? Can they be fixed?

The clutch pack only costs about £150 and Mad Geordie has done the job himself
Other than that its a gearbox re-furb at about £600 plus fitting, plus VAT

i would ring an auto trans specialist to see if they can get hold of em from somewhere else other than the dealer's first mate.

replaced the gearbox last night! put a second hand unit in and its working fine now. must have been the box after all, not a job i would recomend for 1 man to try on his own as it took me 10 hours start to finish.....,but the good news is it works fine and now i have a sparebox with tranferbox! if anybody requires a transfer box just send me an email..
