extra fuel tank - just an idea for now
« on: August 10, 2008, 03:45:08 PM »

i've had a thought, i've recently started off roading and i think i'll be spending a lot of time on green lanes,

so i want to fit a seperate fuel tank so i can run red diesel when i'm off road, i've got an endless supply of red diesel at work at cost price (70-80p ish), i've had a look at tanks and found a few at around 20 litres which would be just right (there normally used in rally cars) but my problem is where to put it.

i don't want a fuel tank inside the car so was thinking underneath, but is there any room for a tank under there?

i've got a 1993 pajero lwb exceed

any ideas appreciated.

When you are green laning you are NOT off-road you are on a public highway and all the normal rules apply — therefore no red diesel!!

Playing on a private site you may be able to but I doubt if it would be worth it

The red stuff is designed to leave a trace in the tank for months.  If customs or cops dip ur tank and the slightist trace is found, then the cars took away and ur in court M8!

If you thinking of usinga extra tank why go down the route of using usedd refined veggie oil, which is legal to do.

my idea was for a totally seperate tank for off road use only. but as said i can't use red diesel on green lanes anyway, so it's not worth it as the majority of off roading i do is green lanes.

i wanted to use red diesel as i can get loads of it very cheap, ah well back to the drawing board.

cheers for your info guys

I don't know if this will help but.... I have a SWB V6 just converted to LPG.

It has a small 24l tank places to the front of the rear axle.

i'd still like to have a seperate tank, i'll have a look infront of the rear axle (thanksmadmacs). it would be worth it for me to use purely for off roading.

for instance: i've got a pay n play day coming up at a private off road curse in a month, i'll be driving around all day off road and using white diesel at £1.20 a litre. i'd like to be using red diesel at £0.80p a litre.

i think i'll look for a changeover valve and measure up for a tank.

but if they dip you on the road it will still show red  for that sort of saving is it realy worth risk losing your truck Huh??

if they dip me on the road they'd only get white diesel from the standard tank. i'd have a seperate tank for the red stuff.

plus i've heard before that they sometimes check at the filter/pump and i'd only use red offroad and switch back to white before going back on the road

the way i plan to do it will be to have 2 tanks each with there own filter and a changeover valve between the filters and the pump. so no red diesel will ever get into the white tank to stain it.
