Lifting
« on: January 26, 2006, 02:18:34 AM »

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about modifying a Pajero.

Lifting improves ground clearance, arrival angle, departure angle and breakover angle - in short, most of the factors that dictate off road performance.

There are 3 ways to achieve this ...

Suspension Lift
Replace the suspension with a kit from a specialist suspension supplier for longer travel and better articulation. Because of the Pajero's torsion bar front suspension this is limited to 30 to 50 mm but this can be improved on by re-working the mounting brackets.

I have Explorer Pro Comp ES9000 shocks and Iron Man rear springs.

Budget approx. £425 plus VAT to include torsion bars.

Larger Tyres and Wheels
Larger diameter tyres will reach deeper into ruts and is the only method to lift the differentials and axles.

I have found 32" x 11" to be ideal on 16" steel rims for strength and the weight keeps centre of gravity low.

However, bear in mind that larger tyres change gearing and hill climbing ability will suffer slightly.

Budget £450 plus VAT for 32" tyres up to £800 plus VAT for 35" tyres.

Body Lift
This is relatively easy up to 50 mm with existing pipes and linkages but is really only a means to an end to make room for larger tyres.
Advice here is "only as much as you actually need", and I have not put a body lift on mine - yet !

Budget £200 incl shipping from US for spacers and new bushes.

The ideal lift is a combination of all these 3 methods giving you a total of 150 mm (6") lift with minimal impact on handling characteristics and vastly improved off road capability.

If you hab=ve a swb, then lwb rear springs lift it by at least 2", I have 36" from floor to arches with these, longer shocks are next on the list!!

Am I being thick but if you dont change the shocks at the same time as the springs wont the srings be preloaded as the shocks are too short? Huh

what the springs do is sag less so the shock will still be working within its range  but the rear end wont drop so far when under load.

What you do then is change the pre-load on the dampening (which is what the shocks take care of), the shocks are still within range.

Its the springs and torsion bars determine ride height.

But if you change to Explorer Pro Comp shocks you get more travel than most anyway - therefore better articulation.

Deffo worth the change mate

Have to say that the combination of Explorer Pro Comp shocks and Iron Man springs works better for me than when I had Explorer rear springs.
