Working parties repairing green lanes
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:20:53 PM »

Is there any record or reference of working parties restoring stretches of badly maintained byways on the net for me to refer to (got a bit of a battle going on elsewhere over this)

Hi Ash

The Glass forum has a whole section about Lane maintenance projects. Here's a link, but you'll probably have to join if you're not a member... http://forum.glass-uk.org/viewforum.php?f=9

They run a National Green Lane Day or used to. I think NERC may have killed off any enthusiasm for this.

It hasn't happened locally for some time now  Sad

Yep a particularly nasty and insidious bit of legislation that removed 50% of our rights of way in 2006

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200506/ldbills/023/2006023.htm

Basically it resulted in us not being able to drive anything other than a Byeway Open To All Traffic

About 4 years ago the Surrey lot did a lot of work to London Lane - dunno if that's any good to you

Maybe a slightly different angle to what you are looking for... This is an Essex County Council leaflet.

http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/content/binaries/documents/Public_Rights_of_Way/byways_leaflet_.pdf?channelOid=null

But this shows how some councils are axcepting the responcibility of maintaining Byways. Afro

In practice it means that all lanes are leveled out & covered with crushed tarmac - the hedges are not cut back & they are now a haven for quad bike riders (usually flat-out) & horse riders... Good combination! Tongue

It can make a nice & relaxing Sunday country drive though, so long as you don't meet any Quads!
