I made a right cock up!
« on: August 26, 2008, 11:03:57 PM »

I went to frickley on sunday, I was will prepaired, 32" tyres, 3" lift bits and bobs removed to stop them getting broken. The 1st 10 mins were ok. I saw some water and started to go through it, It was MUCH deeper than I thought, I started to reverse but I wasnt going anywhere, Then the engine cut out, I looked down and there was water coming in, ARGH!!!! Someone finally came to my rescue. Once out of the water I tried to start the engine, Nothing, Checked the intercooler hoses, No water in them. I was totally confused. Finally the tractor came to tow me away, I stopped at the top of a hill and tried to bump it, It finally started. It sounded really rough, There was a horrible Squeal, Loads of black smoke and wouldnt rev over 2000rpm. After a few mins, Steam started puthering out of the snorkel then a massive oil leak. The turbo was pissing oil out, Game over for me, The tractor then took me to the carpark. I phoned the RAC to take me home, A bloke came out, Had a look, Got in his van then made a phone call, He got out of the van the said "sorry, The policy is void, Youve been using it off road" The only thing the RAC could do for my was make me pay, £150 to do 19 miles!!!! I told them to stick it. There was a very nice chap the who had a van and trailer, He took me home for £30, I was well pleased.

Ive had to strip the interior out, Hose the inside of the car out, Wash the carpets, Dry the sat nav out, Dry the Glow plug ECU out.

The turbo is dead, The alternator is dead, I think there is water in the fuel.

All in all, A bad day

Did you say you had a snorkel?

Obvioulsy you problem is water related, but how???

I don't want to rub it in, but how deep were you? Any pics?

You must have a manual seeing as you bump started it then?

Hope it's not terminal, good luck

I was playing on Sunday as well my clutch went.

Rang the breakdown services guy came out with the recovery truck - took one look at mine covered in mud and turned around and said 'had a good day off-roading then mate' as he loaded it.

Had that every time from the AA guys Cool Cool

Sorry to hear that mate - hope it's just the turbo

Let us know if you find out where water managed to get in despite the fact you had a snorkel

I would have a word with the RAC head office about that episode and at least demand ytour money back as if that wasn't made clear when you signed up then the policy was mis-sold. Although it may have been different if you were on the road itself.

if your on public highway they have to recovery you regardless thats what it says in the policy, i been through this many times as you all know lol cant tow you from private land but once on public they have to its in there contract, sounds like you just got a lazy shit who didnt wanna get his nails dirty
if water is in ya turbo and turbo is shot mate your valves will be bent aswell, if it wont rev up there,s a sighn of the bent valves or valve, i have been through this millions of times, better get ya wallet oot
does ya snorkel attach to your air box? as mines does thats where the water gets in the air boxes arnt water tight! as i found out at a cost
hope ya get it sorted mate

I thought the RAC etc would recover your vehicle even when you have been in an accident - i.e. totalled?

Never heard of recovery service refusing before

take them on !

The Turbo is definatly shot, 100% screwed. There wasnt a drop of water in the intake system. Ive tested the Compression 22bar on 1 and 24 bar on 2,3 and 4. According to the manual, That is acceptable. Im still not sure if there is water in the diesel, I drained some into a jug today and not water what so ever. The carpet is nearly dry, The replacment turbo should be here is the next couple of days. So far, Everything is looking up, TOUCH WOOD!!!

Have you been in touch with the RAC afterwards to find out why they wouldn't recover you...??

Ive nearly had trouble with the rac for the same problem. They still recovered me. id killed me alternator and needed to get up to lossiemouth right at the top of scotland....................from lincolnshire! Shocked

Set off from camp and got 20 miles down the road and pulled over and rang the rac! took it no bother!

Wasnt too bad to be fair, set off with a quarter of a tank and got 450 miles! barely touching a drop! Grin did take 15 hours alltogether though! Shocked
