PLEASE HELP ME IVE GOT HEAD GASKET PROBLEMS AGAIN??
« on: August 27, 2008, 08:11:51 PM »

I own a 1996 pajero 2.8 td exceed. it has done 88,00 miles and has been very well looked after. never seen mud or a bumpy road, washed and polished every fortnight regardless. Also fully serviced every 3,000 miles

the problem started last year when my bottom pulley packed up, the water pump stopped working and it got very hot, i put a new head on and replaced the head gasket, bottom pulley wheel, water pump, thermostat, and a complete service, i spent 1.400 .

well bugger me !!!! the head gasket has gone again, after doing aprox 3,000 miles. I am told this is a common fault, but what i want to know is how common, i do not want to keep having to do this job.

its a crying shame as i really look after my car. Any advice on what causes this, or how to stop it happening would be nice.

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS POST AND I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR REPLYS, ALL THE BEST SHREK..

It's not really a common fault although everyone will tell you that

Possibilities are that the gasket was not installed properly in the first place or the new head has a 'fault from new'

If the job is done properly you should not have to redo it Wink

It's not possible to skim a 2.8 head as they have ceramic disc inserts

Sorry to hear that

I would guess it's due to the head not being installed properly or a common problem between the two heads - such as blocked radiator

Did it overheat this time beforehand ?

Thank you all for your comments and advice. Today i went to the garage that fitted the head last time, He has agreed to change the head gasket, and do this free of charge. the reason being the head bolts were not re tightened after the car had done a few miles. He checked the head bolts and a couple were loose. i have also ordered a thicker head gasket so hopefully my pajero should be back to normal pretty soon.

Thank you hank.. LOL  i might give it a try but knowing my luck i will miss and that will give her something else to moan at. One thinks a part exchange might be a better idea.

Interesting post, glad things have worked out ok mate, but my mechanic whom fitted a thick gasket (D TYPE) TO MY 2.8 1995, said it doesn't need re-tightening as it was tightened to a certain pattern. I haven't had it re- tightened on the strength of that, your post has caused me concern!
What should i do now?   Undecided

The 2.8 head is tightened cold to a sequence including angle tightening — this stretches the bolts.

New bolts must be used every time the head is removed as once stretched the bolts will stretch easier causing loose bolts after running.

To stop garages reusing the bolts ask for the bolts and old gasket when you take the truck in for the job to be done — an honest garage won't give a fig about your request

Only the 2.5 head is tightened cold and hot — many garages skip the essential hot tighten (as this takes an extra 3 hours to do) causing later head gasket problems
