well its good to see the old site up and running again and well done to all concerned. went for a drive today and me old girl seems to have lost her overdrive...! normally she will drop in to overdrive at about 45mph but today nuthing. even if i switch the overdrive off and on via the switch, the light on the dash goes on and off but nothing else happens, normally if you do this the revs will increase slightly. had a little look underneath and i did notice this little thing attached to the rear of the gearbox that has a wire snapped off (now im sure this has always been like this but maybe someone can shed a little light as too what this little gizmo does)

did it come off the gearbox on the passengers side around where the front drive shaft fit to the transfer box if it did the its part or is the switch for the overdrive. hope that helps

Its the overdrive solenoid. It needs all its wires connected to work  (and even then it might not)

hi guys well it seems that the offending piece in the above picture might have something to do with the rear transver box...! as the overdrive solanoid is on the passenger side of the gearbox with one wire going to it. now ive had the car in at my uncles garage and he has tested the wire going to the solanoid with the ignition turned on but no matter if you have the overdrive switch on the gearstick on or off for the overdrive mode there is no power going through this wire to the solanoid. im hoping this will mean there is a break somewhere in this wire or is it more complicated and is this wire also connected to the speed sensor. can anyone verify if this wire leading to the overdrive solanoid is always live or what. cheers

the switch came from the rear end of the box, right next to where the speedo goes in. there are two of these little things right next to each other. been quoted 180 pounds for a new overdrive solanoid  unless someone here knows where i might get one cheaper, IF i need one that is, as we still cant work out why there is no live feed down the overdrive solanoid from the o/d switch on the gearstick

yerv will only get feed when motor n box is warm as ther is an inhibitor to stop over drive engageing untill motor is warm

There are quite a few factors involved in allowing overdrive including ... Coolant temp, ATF temp, 3 rd gear, road speed and throttle position
Unfortunately Haynes is very vague and my CD manual is for 5 speed gearbox
OD solenoid is same side as propshafts, towards the back and just above the sump pan joint.
I think what you have in that picture is one of the 2 swiches for the 2WD / 4WD indicator lamps from the transfer case - these both have ball bearings behind them.

ok guys, spoke to my uncle today and he has tested the solanoid wire and there are no breaks in it and he has also manually tested the solanoid itelf and this does click on and off. the problem we are having is understanding how this all works together as he has also tested the wiring which comes from the engine bay into the car and as far as he can see its all ok. The funny thing is is that once the ignition is on and he then tests the o/d switch on the gear stick there is NO feed, so how this switch works is a mystery...! When the car is driven it goes from first gear to second and then third no problem but at 45mph when you expect 4th or torque lockup i get nothing. even at a lower speed say in 3rd doing about 35mph if i flick the o/d button on or off nothing happens.
We really need a detailed diagram of the wiring of the gearbox to sort this problem out....HELP PLEASE SOMEONE.... i cant walk to work for ever..... tomorrow he is going to give it a drive and get everything up to temp and see what happens. oh and yes we now know the broken switches are for the 2wd/4wd transfer box so will fix them another time once i get my overdrive back...!

 ok guys guess what....! i FOUND my overdrive....! ok first thing was to check the solanoid, with a live feed going to it we found it would click so we knew the overdrive solanoid was ok. the water temp sensor was not working so we disconected that and tried but still no overdrive, so we then disconected the gearbox temp sensor also but still no joy.( these 2 both have a negative feed so by disconecting them has the affect of them working i think..!) So today we decided to unplug the connector that sits by the fuel filter, this has 2 wires going through it. one comes from the overdrive solanoid into the car and the other comes from the gearbox temp sensor and goes to ( i dont know) we then connected a live feed via a switch to the wire going down to the overdrive solanoid( on flicking the switch the solanoid click on and off) i then went for a drive with the switch turned on and hey guess what...! the old girl drove as she should with all her gears and overdrive. So for the time being it works. i still have the water temp sensor and gearbox sensor unplugged so will maybe replace them soon.( where can i buy a water temp sensor and gearbox sensor..!) on conclusion it looks like the wire coming from the overdrive switch on the gearstick to the solanoid must have a break in it somewhere, what i might do now is run a brand new wire direct from the solaniod to the switch on the gearbox(still leaving in the original wiring)to see if this will work.
