Mixing veg oil
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:51:47 PM »

Any of you veg oil users had any problems putting the veg oil in before the diesel??? Some veggie oil sites say add veg oil after diesel, but none give a reason why. Asking cause it's awkward judging how much diesel to put in if adding a set amount oil.

I used to put the veg oil in after, so you know what the ratio is edd, as long as its well mixed up, then i don't suppose it matters tbh.

i always but it in afterwards, edd i usualy fill up with quarter of a tank to go then but about 45 litres of diesel in then 21 litres of oil brims it in the summer i will obviously use less diesel and more oil.

Probably purley down to getting the ratio of oil and derv correct, its eaiser to work out once you have put your derv in ( although its only a guideline), i dont put veg oil in anymore, the bin men were getting the hump with the amount of plastic containers they were having to cart away Grin

tho oil is heavyer than diesel so putting it in first would cause the diesel to float on top and not mix properly, putting it in after diesel causes it to mix as it sinks in the tank(or somthing to that effect) i normaly use a 50/50 mix did cause the old girl to run a bit sluggish on start up but now i have just recently put a fuel warmer on and have used more oil to diesel car sluggish for about a minute whilst the cold mix comes out the filter.

The mix isn't that critical, approx 50/50 is OK, so if you have 1/2 a tank of diesel then top it up with veg, if you have veg in at the time then stick a couple of lts in and a couple of veg, it's not like a chemestry lesson at school, about right is good enough!!

Any particular brand of veg oil you'd recomend? And where can I buy a fuel wamer? I'm definately considering going down this road but I live in central London..will the smell give cause for a nicking by the beastman?

If you dont want nicking pay the duty on it we do. As for fuel warmer i belive there are some on Ebay at the mo.
As for the oil its self it MUST be rape oil not sunflower or olive oil. As for price the best place we have found it tesco's at 42p per litre.

Think I have the answer Mule.
Most veg oil sold in supermarkets is rapeseed ,  should be written on the label... Rapeseed is thinner and flows better , easier on the fuel pump..
