Mine only comes on when the engine is at normal temp, from cold I could drive 5 miles or 205 miles no problem once I turn off the engine and restart the lights flash and a faint wearing sound can be heard from the front axle it sounds like something is partly engaging but I know its ok because I have driven hundreds of miles with the lights flashing, I have checked the solenoids and the shaft underneath and it is well greased and replaced the diff oil Think it must be black magic or someone has put a spell on my front axle Mick

Think you have a vacuum leak, faulty non return valve, or Free Wheel Engage Switch When change 2wd to 4wd and vice versa, the actuator moves the actuator shaft, and its position is monitored by the free wheel engage switch. If the actuator is moving and the shaft is free, then the next check is the free wheel engage switch. It either needs replacing or cleaning (bad connection). This is located above the actuator shaft and if you remove your bashplates can see it clearly. To test continuity, whilst in 4wd, and igintion off, link across the connector. Upon restart if the flashing has stopped this confirms the wiring from the connector to the ecu is intact and the switch needs work (don't forget to remove the link and reinstate afterwards). Have a good read of all that article tho - its a truly great bit of info

Just going through the same problem. The whirring sound is the front actuator shaft trying to engage the front differential. This creating waer and could lad to expensive problems. My problem seems to be the switch on the transfer case which a bu@@er to get to. Anyone know of a supplier?

Mine is a 2.8 but I was wondering if all the switches are the same, ie, freewheel etc.? I think there are 4 on the box altogether?

I have nothing that confirms it but I suspect they are the same
