« on: February 05, 2006, 09:20:19 AM »

Right - Ive various scratches and marks on the lower silver trim of my paj - what do you reckon would be a fair price to get the lot resprayed?

Need an idea as Im going to start getting a couple of quotes together this week...

I've got to do the same thing, was thinking of removing the corners and doing it myself, shouldn't be too hard!

From the state of mine I would say a decent primer would be a good start.

Mine seem to be Mallorca Black straight over white plastic  Sad

This is a fairly easy job to do. Remember preperation and patience are the keys to a decent looking job. Smiley
First remove said trim from the car and rub down with a decent 180 grit wet and dry to give the primer a good key. If you have deep scratches fill with plastic filler that stays flexible after its gone off. then spray with a decent  builder primer for plastic trim, this will fill the minor scratches. Wait 48 hours and repeat primer but use a finer grade wet n dry.

Wait for primer to dry (another 48 hours!) then rub down with 1000 grit wet n dry, then paint with what ever colour your trim was to start.  Use several thin coats and build up slowley giving at least 20 mins between coats. Leave to dry for another 48 hours. Then rub down using the finest wet n dry you can lay your hands on, dont rub too hard as you are only trying to smooth out the ineviviatable imperfections like dust caught in the paint. Now spray with a clear laquer and again more thin coats are better than one thick coat.
The paint will take at least 2 weeks to go off, longer if outside so try to avoid putting it back on too soon!

Other tips are. DONT do it out side. use an old large cardboard box as a spray booth to catch the over spray. Keep the room you are using well ventilated but fairly warm. Cover everthing you dont want sprayed with a dust sheet unless you want to catch hell from the missus and use even side to side strokes going past the part being painted to avoid build up off exess paint.
Every thing needed can be bought from Halfrauds Grin
Hope this helps Grin

It depends alot on how much work is involved and each car is differant, but i would say £100 is a fair price for all the removable plastic parts, but like the other guys have said it will be loads cheaper to do it yourself its realy not that hard you just have to be patient and not cut corners if you want a good job.

Welllllll ... was in at the accident repair place this morning.

Explained what I wanted ... so he starts with £200 for paint, then 16 hour to strip and rebuild the parts along with spraying ... then there was the new rubber seals ... so it ended up at 700plus vat ...err no.

Spoken to a mate in the trade he can get any effected panels (they're not all needing work) done for £200.  Thing is hes in newcastle and Im down in the midlands, but I am working up there in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed.

Are they realy that bad? it sounds alot to me Undecided you can get the paint made to order at halfords in either touch up bottles, spray cans or 1/2 litre tins for spray guns.

Mask them off, rub 'em down, use plastic primer and spray! Plastic padding should sort any deep scratches!

as mule says. It realy is the best option, especialy if you are planning to do any off roading while you own it, save your money for now and do it when you plan to sell it if need be.

Well I reconfirmed with the importer this afternoon - he can arrange for the worst bits to be done over a couple of days later in the month.  They're not that bad other than a few areas - the back corner peices and sides under the doors are the worst and its just scuffing - no deep gouges or marks.

The last option Im going to investigate is a local 'chipsaway' dealer - Ive used them in the past for minor repairs and found them excellent.

I appreciate your comments about the off roading etc - Im just really anal about such things.
