This link is from another forum I'm a member of. Makes interesting reading.

My conclusion is, it could be worth a go, Any other opinions?

He did, but I've read somewhere else, of a chap that soaked various rubber components in Acetone for an extended time and there were no detrimental effects on them with regard to swelling or deterioration. I've got a can of brush wash somewhere in the workshop, I'm pretty sure it's 100% Acetone, Think I might dig it out and put my brave head on over the weekend.  Smiley

I used to be involved in seal manufacture and design of hydraulic valvegear years ago and the most popular polymer for making hydraulic seals such as o rings and shaft seals was nitrile rubber.  It makes efficient seals and is resistant to most hydrocarbons such as mineral oils and fuels.  I would guess that the seals in the diesel pump would consist of nitrile rubber.  One of the chemicals that nitrile rubber is not recommended for, however, is acetone.
The very low concentration suggested in this proposal may be dilute enough to have a negligible effect on the life of the seals but I would personally be happier to see the system work for others for a few years before trying it myself.  Or failing that obtain better information on the resistance of nitrile to the cencentrations we are discussing.
I must admit though - it is tempting.

Well I just put 50 litres of diesel in the Paj. Just have to find something to measure out 50ml of Acetone.

In response to the above post. Going on available information at this time, which includes one chap having done 40 odd thousand miles with no ill effects, I think it's a reasonably safe risk as far as I'm concerned. Like you say the amounts used are minute really 1:1000.
My average mileage is approx 10K per annum. Assuming I don't have any issues for 20K then that's fine by me. I never keep a motor that long.  - With the exception of my Celica.  Grin

I'll keep you all up to speed on any developments, improvements or blow ups.  Shocked

Errrrrrr...... aren't you suppose to add the acetone to cooking oil as it, or a variant, is already in diesel?
