The Army Cadet Force
« on: February 24, 2007, 04:31:14 PM »

Sometime in February 1981, a chum and I were sitting in the school library (avoiding the rain - not doing anything constructive you understand) when he mentioned that he'd just joined a unit of the Army Cadet Force which was actually less than a mile from where I lived at the time. I agreed to nip down with him that evening and take a look (as I've always played with toy soldiers). The rest, as they say, is history and I never had the sense to leave.

I had always harboured an ambition to join the Regular Army, but a nasty rugby injury put the kybosh on that plan. So, I've been a serving and active member of Yorkshire Army Cadet Force.

I've progressed through the ranks (only missing out RSM) as a Cadet, an Instructor and an Officer up to the rank of Lieutenant. I was appointed to my first independant command in 1993 and currently command a unit of approximately 60 cadets and staff in the centre of Huddersfield. At the moment, we are attached to the newly formed Yorkshire Regiment, but I have worn the badges of The Royal Artillery (mostly), The Royal Engineers and The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. I am the proud holder of The Cadet Forces Medal (for long service and good conduct) with a clasp for a second award and The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.

The ACF has given me the opportunity to travel to far off places (Germany in 2000 was a real scream) and to sample many new experiences (driving a Landy anywhere I like across Salisbury Plain was great fun). Probably the greatest buzz of the ACF is to see a little scrote who turns up at the door and wanting "to join the cadets mate" turn into a confident, well-mannered, achieving and stable young citizen. (I bring to mind one such scrote who is now serving in the Regular Army in the rank of Sergeant with a wife and two very well behaved children, you can imagine how it feels when such a young man goes to some trouble to track you down to ask you to be a Godfather to his eldest!)

If anyone would like to learn more about the ACF (the real thing, not the official version) visit www.ArmyCadetForce.com.

The Yorkshire Regiment was formed on 6th June 2006 by the amalgamation of The Green Howards, The Prince of Wales' Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The Army Cadet Force units attached to these regiments rebadged at a parade on 10th June at Imphal Barracks, York (I was pretty impressed to have mine presented by The Duke of Westminster).

It's possible the badge you're thinking of was a silver horse which was the badge of The Prince of Wales' (it's now the collar badge of the new regiment)

Can you post a picture of it (scan or photo). Another of hobbies is collecting (some) militaria so I may be able to identify it for you.
