My Quest...help required
« on: March 17, 2007, 01:18:06 PM »

My brother and I are trying to trace our family history and we need some help.

My maternal grandfather was born circa 1880 we have his death cert but do not know his birth details (my grandparents never married either so no help there). I have searched all the archives on line and have come up with about 6 possibilities.

The biggest clue is his accent, my mother remembers he used to prononce the word vase as vauze (rhyming with gauze)

This is very much a regional dialect and I just wondered if any of you people could help pinpoint the area of the country where this pronunciation was used.

Dunno if this is any use, but I've always pronounced it that way (Yorkshire)

It all helps Smiley

My brother is house bound at the moment. He had a heart operation and cancerous kidney removed within the space of 2 weeks so he is trying to occupy himself.

Thinking a little further about it, the pronunciation would be more obvious from the other side of the border in Lancashire.

Also, being born around 1880, he would have been eligible for call up during WW1, have you tried any of the MoD archives?

I have found other members of the same family in the same street, it may be worth searching the streets of the possible ones to have and then working back from those to their parents and then working back to see if there is a link. It takes abit of time, but it can help.

We know his name and his birthday. We have worked out his year of birth. My Mum was the youngest of 4 and knows very little about him. There is a lot of mystery surrounding him !!!!
