Ruts -
Once again, you should get out of your vehicle and check them out on foot. What start as shallow ruts could get deep just around the corner.
This is a particular danger on greenlanes, which are often used by heavy farm traffic. Tractor ruts are too deep for any land rover to follow without getting grounded. If driving ruts, check their depth and the amount of sludge in the bottom of them. If you have to cross ruts remember to cross them diagonally at approximately 45-50 degrees.
Look for the tell-tale signs of diffs or chassis from previous vehicles having scraped the ground on the ridge between the ruts.
These are the lowest points on your vehicle and the first to get grounded. Beware of protruding sharp rocks , which can cause damage to tyers.
Driving ruts can be a bumpy experience, so make sure your passengers are belted up and that there are no loose items rattling around.
To drive them, engage low box and diff lock. Second or third gear should enable you to maintain momentume. Do not change gear once you are in the ruts - and keep accelerating gradually.
Know where your front wheels are pointing. A vehicle travelling along deep ruts will go straight ahead, even if the wheels are pointing in the wrong direction . This can damage the side walls of your tyres and send you out of control when you reach the end of the ruts.

At the risk of stating the obvious........
most ruts can be straddled by the average 4x4, in fact it is the recommended method taught by all most all off-road schools

never ask for directions, they will be wrong, unintelligble and miss out all the wet/muddy/fun bits

That would be fine if there's only the one set of ruts forming a track!!!

I just pick the shallowest which will generally be formed where other motors have been straddling the deepest.
As a secondary point, straddling ruts where ever possible also lessens the damage to the track.

and from me.....
agreeing with all said with the addition of, if the track has high sides, this is double reason for walking it first, otherwise, if you do ground, you may not be able to open your doors to get out.
