Driving off road is mainly an ongoing risk assessment process.
Speed is not your friend and its often shedding excess speed that causes problems.
Imagine a telepgraph pole across a muddy track Not as problem at all if crawling along at tickover - just roll over it but faster and you stand to damage the car and hurt the occupants !
And of course - sudden braking on mud can send you into a slide, or even a roll if there's a slope.
So slow and cautious is the rule.
I've taught quite a few newcomers how to drive off road now. The telegraph pole story seems to be one that everybody grasps straight away.
