Need advice on leaking diff seals.
« on: April 20, 2007, 01:30:46 AM »

I've got a couple of oil seals leaking on the front and rear diffs on my 1994 LWB Shogun and I'm looking for advice.

The one on the front diff is leaking at the nearside driveshaft. Having a look, the whole UJ boot and the can type thing behind it are a loose fit in the diff. Would that be causing the problem? The Haynes book of lies is useless, doesn't give a proper diagram of the assembly, so I don't know where the driveshaft/diff seal is supposed to be. Is the seal at the large can, or is it further in the diff sealing around the driveshaft itself, which is what I suspect.

Allso, can anyone give me pointers as what needs to be done to fix it? It looks as though the hub carrier needs to come off to get the driveshaft out of the diff. If so, then I might as well get it done at the same time as the front wishbones and ball joints, which also need replacing.

Also, the rear diff is leaking at the propshaft seal. According to haynes, this looks a relatively easy job: unbolt the propshaft, unbolt the diff flange, use a puller to pull the flange off, then you can work on the seal.

The only tricky thing about putting it all back together appears to be torquing the flange nut to the correct torque, so the bearings have the correct preload.

Anyone done these jobs and can offer any tips and advice?

Thanks,

Mark.
