EGR Valve and new to Pajero
« on: February 11, 2006, 06:06:51 PM »

Hi all,
I am new to this site, having just brought a very nice 1993 2.8 swb Pajero. The only problem i have after lookin over it, is there is a small vacume pipe on the EGR valve that is not connected, now i can see were this pipe connects, and when i connect it, the car starts to Pink (Knock )when reved HuhHuh? It runs fine with the pipe disconnected, but when i start it from cold ie:left over night, it takes ages to start with loads and loads of smoke. I have read that some people disconnect the EGR valve, how do i do this? and is it possible that this, disconected pipe is this causing my cold start problems? any help or feed back would be great,
                                          Many Thanks.

Hi mate

There are two schools of thought on this

1. blank the EGR valve off using a blanking plate.. this isolates the valve and improves cold starting and the dreaded black smoke. Though there are some reports of the cracked heads..apparently related to blocking off the valve. The blanking plates are available on ebay for a couple of quid.

( though many people including myself have never experienced any problems)

2. Clean the EGR valve, may have to do this on a frequent basis, using a strong degreaser. This was how mitsi intended the engine to run. Many people report smoother driving, less smoke on start up.

Whatever you decide to do is entirely up to you..as i say i have blanked mine off and never had any trouble at all.
