Snorkel Fitting

This article details fitting a Safari snorkel but the procedure is identical for the Airtech brand and having fitted both we feel they are of equally good quality.

The keys to successful snorkel fitting is accurately aligning the template and marking the locations to drill, using strong carpet tape to prevent the drill skating, and then carefully sealing all the joints and the airbox itself.

-- Special Tools  - 86MM hole Saw --

Duration of Job:  2-3hrs

Instructions:

  1. Remove the plastic guard liner from the right hand side front wheel arch. Taking carer not to loose the screws and tabs. Undo clips and pipes to air filter assembly block up the air pipe into the turbo with a piece of tissue to prevent stray bolts or dirt entering turbo assembly.

  1. Unbolt and remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the washer bottle from the inner guard area. Extra fixings are located inside of the engine compartment in the wing assembly. Scrapped knuckles are the order of the day here.

  1. Put the kettle on!
  1. Tape the template in position. Be sure to get this straight and accurate against the top edge of the wing. (Recommend that the holes are then marked using a felt tip pen) remove the template.

  1. Take a deep breath and drill a 4mm pilot hole for each of the holes. Open the 6 mounting holes to 16 mm using a step drill. Open the front hole to 86mm using a hole saw. ( It can be done using a smaller cutter with lots of smaller holes, then filed to size) The drill should be parallel to the body work whilst cutting. After drilling and cutting deburr all holes and leave a smooth edge. Apply some primer or paint onto the drilled holes to prevent corrosion.

  1. Fit into the body of the snorkel the six steel studs. We used locking compound to prevent movement. Then silicone to seal the base of the stud against the snorkel. Bolt the upper mounting bracket to the snorkel using 3, 6mm x12mm bolts and washers. Sit the snorkel on the car and mark the bracket position on the A pillar. Ensure that the snorkel is straight and fitted flush against the wing for accuracy as this is quite tricky, ideally a 2 person job. Remove the snorkel from the car and remove the bracket from the snorkel. Hold the bracket in position on the A pillar and mark the mounting hole positions. Drill these 4 holes to 8mm.

  1. Paint all holes to prevent corrosion. Insert the plastic body clips into the A pillar holes.

  1. Sit the alloy casting on the outer side of the inner guard hole. (The snout of the casting should be pointing towards the large snorkel hole). Mark the washer bottle mounting hole positions on the casting. Drill these holes to 8mm. Bolt the casting into position, using the foam gasket to seal between the casting and body work. Again silicone sealer was used to ensure a good fit.

  1. Replace the snorkel back on the wing and secure into place, tighten all fixings access via underneath of wing, then refit the bottle washer. Tighten bolts on A pillar.

  1. Place the rubber hose on the casting snout, and secure, again using sealer.

  1. Refit air cleaner assembly to car. It is essential to seal all the joints with silicone to ensure a water proof seal. Refit the guard liner.

  1. Place the air ram on top of snorkel and secure using the jubilee clip. Job done!
